I'm working hard on my chalkboard decor. I got my 3-D shape posters done! YAY! Soon I hope to have all of my chalkboard stuff bundled. Grab your freebie below :)

I just stumbled upon this ADORABLE freebie from Sparkling in Kindergarten. I love them! I just downloaded them for my kids this year... chalkboard and chevron is my new theme! Thanks Stephanie!   Her blog is super cute, go check her out!
Are they not the cutest?! I'm going to laminate them, but any tips on how to stick 'em down so they stay?

Have to rescue a baby bird in my yard, so off I go... never a dull moment :)

Gearing up for the end of the year.. A freebie too!

7 more days. I can do it! Today I completed my end of the year gifts for my kids and completed our end of the year slide show. We filmed our "entrance" on the green screen and it looks like the kids are walking the red carpet- so stinkin cute! I wish I could share :( I just purchased these cute chalkboard circles from Erin Bradley  because I am now obsessed with chalkboard! I just bought these cute alphabet posters from Lindsey at A Year of Many Firsts. So cute! Click the pic to go see them on TpT.
Anyway, I bought the chalkboard circles and started making supply labels for next year and table numbers, and decided I couldn't wait to use them and made labels for my bubbles for the kids this year. They are below if you are looking to create class gifts (I know most of you are already out, but maybe you're thinking WAY ahead for next year? ;) )

I also created labels for hand lotions for my room mothers. I've had the same room moms for 2 years now, as I've had both of their girls since kindergarten. It will be sad to see them go :( I hit up the Bath and Body Works sale and got some hand lotions but have not yet assembled their gifts!

Hope you enjoy this freebie. I am off to work on my other 200 things on my end of year to-do list!

By the way, the winner of my mystery reader packet is comment #4 - Suzy Q! I just sent you an e-mail :) Click the picture to see the packet on TpT! I have it on sale until Tuesday for $3!

Sorry I've been MIA... freebie and a linky!

What a week. Or two weeks. However long I've been gone! :) I already mentioned this, but I'm moving to kindergarten next year, and I'm moving to a new school in my district. I spent all of last week as a K teacher and a 1st grade teacher - bouncing between two buildings, two classrooms, and two positions. I spent my Tuesday at parent night for incoming K parents, meeting a new teacher who will be my teammate for the first time and getting back into my kindergarten groove. Then, I mingled with the parents - luckily, they were very nice :) On Thursday and Friday, I spent the day in my new classroom meeting the kindergarteners. So cute, but so little compared to my big first graders. On top of all of that, I still was teaching my kiddos in 1st grade and tried to explain my absence to them, but they still weren't thrilled to have a sub. Meanwhile, my dad has been seriously ill since last week, so I've had personal days thrown in there to be with my family. Whew! I am so ready for summer vacation. I have had no time to plan, and very little time to make anything fun :(

I will share this quick freebie with you to make up for my absence, I hope you can use it! We're working on compound words this week, and I needed a quickie match game for the pocket chart :)

Also, I'm linking up with I {heart} Recess for a fun linky for bloggers with under 200 followers :)

Jess asked that we answer the following questions:

1. Why did you start blogging? Because I loved stalking following other bloggers and getting great ideas, and I thought I could do it too!
2. What is your favorite subject to teach and why? Writing - in the younger grades, there is so much incredible progress, they make you feel like a superstar teacher no matter what!
3. Describe your teaching style. Flexible, versatile, and creative- I believe in teaching to the group I have, changing things up constantly to meet their needs, and being creative in content delivery :)
4. Give three interesting facts about you.
   - I have never taught the same grade 2 years in a row.
   - My husband and I are high school sweethearts (dating since age 14)
   - I have worked for 5 principals in 5 years!
5. Do you have a TpT store? If yes, post the link :)
 Yes! Primary Buzz

Have a great night :)

Monday's Freebie and Getting Acquainted!

I have a personal day and I feel like I still need to compulsively check my work e-mail, worry, hope the sub plans are okay, etc... Plus, I'm now doing the work of a first grade teacher AND a k teacher since this week is our K parent night, plus 2 days of incoming K visits. I'm moving schools AND grades, and it is nuts...

My personal day allowed me to finish this unit:

YAY! This has been a work in progress for months. I bundled concepts about maps and map skills, the United States, the continents, and community helpers, because I have taught K, 1 and 2, and these are the units I taught! For me, it makes sense to have 'em all together. This unit is now available on TpT at a reduced price for the next few days! If you're like me, you're teaching this stuff right now, which is why I *needed* to finish ASAP! :) Click the pic to hop over to the TpT listing and check out the preview.

I am linking up in a few different places today. First, Classroom Freebies! I have a freebie from this unit to share. I was thinking about how cute it would be to do this kind of Pinterest inspired photo shoot for the end of this year OR back to school, or just to do this fun activity! The freebie is 3 variations (out of 5 included in the unit) of "When I Grow Up...". I hope you like it!

Also, I am linking up with Latoya for Let's Get Acquanited!

This week's questions:

1.  What made you decide to become a teacher?
I have always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I was little. However, when it came time for college, I majored in social work and counseling! Immediately after graduating from college with my bachelor's degree, I entered a master's program and received my master's in early childhood education 2 years after that. During that time, I worked as a kindergarten assistant and fell in love with the little ones :)
2. What has been your most rewarding experience as a teacher?
Being able to loop with 5 of my students from K-1. Watching those 5 kiddos bloom has been so rewarding! I can't believe their growth and progress. Having that special relationship with them and their families has been so rewarding. I wouldn't trade it for anything! It will make the end of the year that much harder :(
3. If you were not a teacher, what would you be?
I would be a baker! I LOVE baking. I make cupcakes and cake pops for every friend's child's birthday or special event. It is so relaxing for me :)

We also talked about the -ike/-ine family, which leads me to this...

Now for my freebie! I am linking up with Classroom Freebies for Manic Monday! My kids are obsessed with QR codes, so I figured I might as well go with it :) This download contains a QR Code activity for the -ike/-ine families and a recording sheet to go with it.

Freebies galore and what we've been up to in literacy :)

Happy Monday! It's the last week before spring break - thank the Lord. Here's a peek at what we've been up to in first grade, plus a few freebies! :)

Today we started using my Woodland Animals non-fiction unit for our new unit of writing. My class loves anything non-fiction, so they're so into it! We read "Squirrels" (I got this pack of woodland animal books from Scholastic last year, they're the perfect level for them!) and practiced some note taking with this jot page I created. Tomorrow, we'll do the same thing with a video aloud.

This is the book - it's a Pebble book. We read it aloud, stopping and jotting every couple of pages. I plan to use this paper for each woodland animal read aloud or video aloud. We have a district assessment that uses a very similar format, so it's also great practice for that!

If you don't own "Fix It Up" by Growing Kinders, you are missing out! We've been using her packet as morning work recently and it aligns perfectly with our Sitton spelling program! Love!
I especially love the "checked by a friend" piece :)

First Grade Buddies have the cutest Earth Day class book that I just purchased. We actually tied it into our mini-unit on mental images! I found a great YouTube video with pictures to go along with the song that the class book is based on, "What a Wonderful World". I played the video without broadcasting it onto the board once, allowing the kids to get mental images, turn and talk about their images, and create a list of images, then we viewed the images in the video. The kids really enjoyed it! We followed up by drawing our mental images for the class book.

Watching the video the second time through...
So adorable!
How sweet is this?!

Here's a link to the YouTube video- make sure you run it through once on your own, advertisements always pop up and sometimes they're questionable :)

We've also been working on blend books by Abby for the past few weeks. They are the perfect addition to my literacy centers!

I have also been utilizing a new app on our iPads!
Voice Recorder

We've been using this app for fluency practice! My kiddos have each been working on fluency over the past few weeks, AND I wanted to have new additions to our listening center, so, they've been recording themselves reading just right books on the iPad! This app allows you to save it to the iPad, upload to Drive/Dropbox, and create a new title for the recording. SO simple for them to use!

Last week, we created Teri's cute little chickies, and this week we're using the making words activity during literacy centers. The kids love these kinds of activities!

Finally, here's another little freebie for you! I created this Scrambled Sight Words game for my kiddos.

In action!

Whoops, forgot I had made another freebie for you guys, but I can't find the pic of this in action today! This is a part of my math daily 5 this week, since we're practicing counting coins. I have numbered plastic eggs (on clearance now after Easter! Yes!) and filled them with random amounts of coins, so here's the recording sheet to go with it if you're interested :)

Lastly, I just won this awesome unit from Khrys at Keepin' It Cool in Kinderland! Ahh, so excited!
Go check her out!!

Tried it Tuesday!

Today, I'm linking up with Fourth Grade Flipper for "Tried it Tuesday"! I'm so excited to talk about my new Math Daily 5 that I began yesterday in my classroom- perfect linky for this! Click the pic below to link up and blog about something you've tried out!

I've been struggling all year with the format of my math workshop. I have 19 kids with varying needs, some who require a significant amount of support. I began my year with a math station format- a teacher station, activity station and a game station, with 3 groups rotating to each station. I stuck with this for months, even though it didn't work for me. I then moved briefly to a different workshop format- with three stations, only I called them math by myself, math with a partner, and math with the teacher. Same concept, but a little less planning for me because the other stations, other than the teacher station, were strictly review. STILL didn't work! I was frustrated... so I scoured Pinterest, chatted with colleagues, and decided to give my version of the Daily 5 a try - only for math!

I spent the weekend prior to this planning - creating my station signs, thinking about what options I would include for that first week, and how to hold the students accountable. I snapped some pics this week to show you what it looks like and so that I can explain how it works!

My Math Daily 5 Board
Each student has a card with their name and picture (not shown, but they live in the purple cup on top of the counter!). They get their Daily 5 sheet, and I pull their names out randomly for them to choose their first stop.

 Close Up View!

My 5 centers (the ones I felt are the important components of a solid math workshop) are:
Math by Myself - Includes games, workbook pages, etc.
Math with a Partner - games for partners, other activities
Math Facts - working on their fact rings (courtesy of Erica Bohrer), other math fact practice
Math with Technology - apps on the iPad, laptops, or my Mimio board
Writing About Math - Math Journals, "Number of the Day", etc.

Middle Drawer: Material Storage. This is my "Oz-some" Ten More, Ten Less math game- click the link to find it :)
Bottom drawer holds my future choices for Daily 5 centers. This is from Deanna Jump's 100th Day Packet! Awesome practice for coins/money, and the kids love it :)

This is for materials! The top drawer is for my folders (see below), middle for materials for any games, and the bottom is storage for upcoming choices!
The top drawer is for the Daily 5 Folders! There is no "Math with Technology" as of right now, because I don't need a recording sheet for any of the activities I have planned for there. There is a different color folder for each station, clearly labeled with the center name, containing the recording sheet(s) for that particular center. The blue folder contains the Daily 5 checklist sheets (below). I store these in the top drawer!

(It's sideways, SORRY!)

On Monday, my kids each get one of these sheets. They write their name on it, and carry it with them to each stop during the daily 5. I start math with a whole group mini-lesson from TERC Investigations on my Mimio board. Then, we break off to Daily 5. I think I'll keep the same options for one entire week without adding anything new. This week, the kids only have 1 (or 2) options for each Daily 5 center that they have played before or are very familiar with, since this is our first week. I plan to add more options (2-4) for each Daily 5 center as we get more comfortable with the format.

To hold the kids accountable, they must check off their Daily 5 sheet as they complete centers. They attach their recording sheets with a paper clip.
Mini containers from AC Moore!
Stored on top of the folders in the top drawer.

My kids are storing their checklists and recording sheets in their "Ketchup" or "Daily Work" folders for the entire week, only turning in their work on FRIDAY. Better for me and my organization!

So, the kids get their checklists, make a choice, and go! They are free to move around to other options as they please. I can honestly say, my kids are the most on task that they have EVER been all year- they are getting so much done! This format makes it so I am free to confer with individuals or pairs, or pull strategy groups (much more flexible format than my previous "3 group" format!). I limit each choice to 6 students, and 4 at technology, since I only have 4 iPads. So far, the kids have been great. IF they finish all 5 choices BEFORE Friday, they are able to take a second (or third!) Daily 5 checklist from the blue folder to do more! I told the kids it was a "bonus round" (worth a sticker- woohoo!).

I'm so hoping that this continues to work- when I asked the kids what went well, they all loved that they had a CHOICE in what they could do for math workshop, they had flexibility in how long they could stay in a spot, and could work with different people during Math with a Partner. I love that I can prep for a whole week, I am still getting my mini lesson and discussion in, I can hold them accountable while giving them more freedom, and can keep my groups flexible and more "on the fly", like in my Reader's and Writer's workshops. My kiddos are learning so much!

Below, I included a little freebie - it contains my signs for the Daily 5, the checklist, and a few of the choices I typed up for my own personal classroom. I included some apps (LetterSchool, Math Slide), Number Boggle, Oz-Some 10 More, 10 Less, Piggy Bank to $1.00, Fact Fluency Flip Cards, Roll & Cover Subtraction, Math Journals, Math Ring Review, and games from TERC, including Make 10, 3 Towers and Counters in a Cup. I hope you can use some of these! If you're struggling with math workshop, give the Daily 5 a try! :)
